BIO
Clyde Stubblefield (April 18, 1943 – February 18, 2017) was an American drummer best known as the rhythmic backbone of James Brown’s band during the 1960s. Often called “The Funky Drummer,” Stubblefield created grooves that not only defined funk music but also became some of the most sampled drum beats in history. His feel, creativity, and pocket made him one of the most influential drummers of all time — even if many people have heard his playing without knowing his name.
Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Clyde Stubblefield started drumming as a child, inspired by the sounds of rhythm and blues, swing, and early rock ’n’ roll. His natural sense of timing and ability to make even simple patterns dance caught the attention of bandleaders early on. In 1965, James Brown hired Stubblefield, and the partnership would shape the sound of modern funk.
Clyde’s drumming powered some of James Brown’s biggest hits, including “Cold Sweat,” “I Got the Feelin’,” “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud,” and, most famously, “Funky Drummer.” That song’s extended drum break — recorded in 1969 — became a cornerstone of hip-hop, sampled by artists like Public Enemy, Run-D.M.C., Prince, and N.W.A. His groove influenced not just funk and soul, but pop, R&B, and rock as well.
After leaving James Brown’s band, Stubblefield continued to perform and record, eventually settling in Madison, Wisconsin. There, he became a beloved local musician, teaching, performing in small clubs, and recording solo projects such as The Revenge of the Funky Drummer. Despite his global impact, Clyde remained humble and devoted to the music itself.
Clyde Stubblefield’s playing is a masterclass in rhythm, restraint, and feel. His grooves still move dancers, inspire drummers, and echo through countless songs across decades of music history — proof that the heartbeat of funk never dies.
